Drivers robbed at petrol pump: police

Police have charged a man with stealing a car from a Hamilton petrol station when its owner got out to fill it up and assaulting two people.

A man has been charged with stealing a car and assaulting two people at a Hamilton petrol station.

The car was taken when its owner got out to fill up at the Norton Road station at 5.50pm on Saturday, police say.

It happened after two other people were also assaulted while filling up at the same petrol station earlier in the day at 1.40pm, police say.

A 36-year-old man now faces charges of assault with intent to injure, aggravated robbery and assault with a blunt instrument.

He is due to appear in Hamilton District Court on Tuesday.
