Auckland City FC stripped of win

Auckland City have been stripped of their ninth-round win in the New Zealand Football Championship for fielding an ineligible player.

Auckland City have been stripped of a ninth-round win and their lead in the national soccer championship for fielding an ineligible player.

The Navy Blues won their December 17 match against Tasman 3-1 to go to the top of the table but in a decision released on Saturday, NZ Football said they'd broken the rules by fielding Micah Lea'alafa.

It said Lea'alafa had not been named in the team's squad ahead of the game.

The decision sees Team Wellington move into the premiership's top spot on 17 points, while Auckland sit on 16 with a game in hand. Tasman move into sixth.

Round 10 of the championship begins on January 6.
