Car hits gas pipe, prompts mass evacuation

A Briscoes retail store and a series of hotels were briefly evacuated in Napier after a car struck a gas pipe.

A retail store and a series of hotels were temporarily evacuated in Napier after a car struck a gas pipe.

The Briscoes on Hastings Street was cleared out as a precaution along with nearby buildings following the crash before noon on Saturday, police said.

A spokesperson said the gas leak had been repaired by 1pm and the cordon around the area lifted.

Drivers were earlier asked to avoid the contained area around Munro Street, Sale Street, Edwardes Street and Marine Parade.
