Man charged over $36,000 ring theft

A man has been charged over the theft of a $36,000 diamond solitaire ring from an Auckland jewellery store.

A man has been charged after a $36,000 diamond ring was stolen from an Auckland jewellery store in broad daylight.

Police said the 31-year-old had turned himself in at the Auckland central police station on Thursday and had been charged with theft of the ring and over two other heists earlier in the year.

The theft of the diamond solitaire ring made headlines this month after reports a man walked into the Asterism Jewellery Store on Elliot Street, asked to look at the item for an engagement and then ran off with it.

The man will return to court in April, having made a brief appearance on Friday.
