Kayaker missing near Rotorua found safe

A kayaker reported missing near Rotorua spent the night tied to a tree but has been found safe, police say.

A kayaker missing near Rotorua has been found safe after spending a night tied to a tree, police say.

Emergency services were notified the 17-year-old man was missing near Okere Falls on Saturday evening.

Police on Sunday said he had been found about 6.30am "safe and well".

"[He] exited the river yesterday after realising he wouldn't be able to make his way out of Gnarly Gorge in the water," a spokesperson said.

"He climbed up the bank, and tied himself to a tree to await rescue."

Police commended the kayaker's actions, saying he had done "all the right things".
