Man killed in year's first fatal crash

A 69-year-old Tauranga man has died in the year's first reported fatal crash, bringing the holiday period road toll to 11.

A Tauranga man has been killed in a two-car crash on the Maungatapu Bridge.

Emergency services were called to the incident on SH29A about 2.15am on Monday, police said.

Police said the man was a 69-year-old local.

The highway has since reopened and police are still investigating.

The death - the first reported road fatality of 2018 - puts the road toll for the holiday period, which ends on January 3, at eleven.

It follows two other fatal crashes on Sunday.

A man died late in the afternoon after a car struck a fence in Whangarei about 10.30am.

A second person was killed in a collision between a ute and a car in the Tasman District about 9pm.

During the 2016-17 Christmas period there were 19 deaths on roads.
