Two dead in Northland plane crash

Two people are dead after a microlight plane crashed at Te Kopuru in Northland.

Two people have been killed in a small plane crash in Northland.

The Rans microlight RV 7 went down at Te Kopuru in the Kaipara District about noon on Monday, police said.

Both people on board - the pilot and a passenger - died at the scene.

The Serious Crash Unit was investigating and the incident would be referred to the coroner and the Civil Aviation Authority, a police spokesperson said.

A CAA spokesman said it was too early to speculate about the cause of the accident and that two investigators were expected to arrive at the crash site on Tuesday.

"They will first meet with police and speak with emergency services who attended the accident," he said.

The CAA is asking for any witnesses to the crash to get in touch.
