A man has drowned at Cable Bay in Northland's Far North.

Police say the 54-year-old man's next of kin are being notified.

Another person has been taken to Whangarei Hospital in a critical condition after emergency services were alerted around 4pm on Tuesday.

Two others were treated at the scene for moderate injuries.

Initial reports were that one person got into difficulties at the northern end of the bay and needed help to be taken from the water.
