    Steel beam smashes car windshield

A Christchurch man had a close call when a steel beam smashed through the windshield of his car while he was driving.

A Christchurch man has been left shaken after a steel beam smashed through his car windshield while he was driving.

A 15cm beam smashed directly into the passenger side of Kaibos Mapuranga's car windshield while he was driving on the outskirts of Christchurch on Sunday morning, reports Fairfax Media.

The 55-year-old says he doesn't know where the beam came from and couldn't see any construction sites nearby or any vehicles it may have come off.

A similar incident claimed the life of a man in Wanaka in 2013 after an object smashed through his car.

Police were mystified as to what crashed through the windscreen of 22-year-old Rutger Hale's car, which ended up smashing through the rear window as well.

The object that killed Mr Hale was never identified, though it's believed it came off a ute.

A police spokeswoman says drivers need to call police immediately if they come across something blocking the road or are involved in a road incident.

"If there is potential for (the object on the road) to cause danger to the public, people are encouraged to call 111," she said.
