    Young stars recognised with nominations

Scientists, leaders, writers and sports stars are among those recognised with a Young New Zealander of the Year award nomination.

The inventor of polarised contact lenses, a blogger with cerebral palsy and an America's Cup champion are among those nominated for the Young New Zealander of the Year award.

The top 10 finalists were announced at the end of December and feature a varied host of young New Zealanders that have made their mark.

Inventor, scientist and entrepreneur Logan Williams received the nod for his dedication to developing innovative technologies, including turning Didymo into useful materials and inventing polarised contact lenses.

"My passion is to develop revolutionary technologies to improve people's lives from all walks of life," Mr Williams says.

Team New Zealand yachtsman Peter Burling is also in the running after he was named male World Sailor of the Year and was part of the winning America's Cup team in 2017.

Blogger Grace Stratton has also been recognised for writing about her journey with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy.

The New Zealander of the Year awards are in their ninth year and the 2018 winners will be announced in Auckland on February 22.
