Wallace gets NRL captaincy nod at Panthers

Peter Wallace has retained the NRL captaincy at Penrith Panthers this season after successfully stepping into the void in 2017.

    - article from www.rugbyleague.co.nz

Penrith coach Anthony Griffin has confirmed Peter Wallace will retain the club's NRL captaincy after impressing in the absence of a disillusioned Matt Moylan last season.

Back-to-back knee reconstructions prompted Panthers boss Phil Gould to suggest to Wallace in 2015 that it may be time to retire.

But the halfback regained full fitness and under the coach who had previously booted him from the Brisbane Broncos, he reinvented himself at hooker.

Now, with Moylan moving to Cronulla, Griffin says there is no reason to look elsewhere after the resilient 32-year-old piloted the side into the finals last season.

"He's been a great servant to the club, Peter, and his transition into hooker - he's a tough competitor no matter where he plays - has given him another lease on life and taken his game to another level and he's a great leader around the place."

"He'll start the season as captain, no tricks, it's breaking news."

Recruited five-eighth James Maloney is looking forward to working alongside the 32-year-old after sparring with him from opposite sides of the park until this point in their careers.

"I think that's perfect, I'm looking forward to playing with Wall," Maloney said.

"I've got a lot of respect for him (after) playing against him and I'm looking forward to partnering up with him."
