    Thunderstorms in lower North Island

    Thunderstorm have been spotted in many parts of the central and lower North Island.

    The MetService says its weather radar has detected severe thunderstorms in parts of the central and lower North Island.

    It detected thunderstorms near Palmerston North, the Manawatu Gorge and Ashhurst about 5.37pm on Saturday and said they were moving south.

    The MetService weather radar also detected severe thunderstorms near Waiouru about the same time.

    The storms may bring very heavy rain, causing surface and/or flash flooding about streams, gullies and urban areas, and make driving conditions extremely hazardous.

    A severe thunderstorm watch remains in force for Hawke's Bay, Taihape, Whanganui, Manawatu, Tararua and Wairarapa.
