Reds coach hails youth after Syd FC draw

A youthful Adelaide United have held Sydney FC to a 0-0 draw at Coopers Stadium, becoming the first A-League side to deny Sydney FC a goal since November.

Adelaide United coach Marco Kurz has hailed the performance of his young side after they achieved the almost unthinkable this A-League season and kept Sydney FC scoreless.

Not since Ben Kennedy kept a clean sheet in Central Coast's 2-0 win over the Sky Blues at the start of November has anyone denied Graham Arnold's men on the scoresheet.

But an injury-ravaged Adelaide United, with Daniel Margush in goal, turned in a spirited performance at Coopers Stadium on Sunday to hold the A-League leaders to a goalless draw.

It puts Sydney FC six points clear at the top of the ladder and stretches their unbeaten run to 11 games.

The depleted United were without Johan Absalonsen, Vince Lia and Nathan Kondstandopoulos on Sunday, on top of the already-absent Paul Izzo, Ben Garuccio and George Blackwood, who were away on Olyroos duty.

Adelaide were dealt a further blow on match day when Ryan Kitto, Baba Diawara and Taylor Regan were ruled out through injury and Nikola Mileusnic was withdrawn during the warm-up.

That late withdrawal meant an A-League debut for 16-year-old Lachlan Brook and a first start for 18-year-old Apostolos Stamatelopoulos.

Pacifique Niyongabire (17), Kristin Kondstandopoulos (19) and Louis D'Arrigo (16) were named on the bench with Niyongabire and Konstandopoulos both getting on the park in the final half hour.

"I'm very happy," Kurz said. "But if you saw the line-up you must be proud about the whole squad, about the young boys.

"Congratulations to the whole team. It's not every day that you get a draw against Sydney FC.

"I said to the players before, 'We have nothing to lose. If we are scared, we have no chance'."

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold also applauded the Reds' performance.

"South Australia and Adelaide should be very proud of those young boys," Arnold said. "They stuck to the task and they were disciplined.

"They got a lot of men behind the ball but you just have one of those nights.

"Other nights we could have four or five - it just didn't go in tonight.

"We take a point home; we're reasonably happy."
