North Island highway closed by flooding

A section of State Highway 46 in the central North Island has been closed by flooding, which also forced seven people to evacuate from a nearby house.

A central North Island highway has been closed and seven people have been evacuated from a house by the road because of heavy rain.

State Highway 46 at Rangipo is closed between Mcdonnells Redoubt Rd and Otukou Rd because of surface flooding.

Motorist are asked to avoid unnecessary travel in the area, allow extra time and drive to the conditions.

Earlier on Tuesday, Auckland's North Shore was hit by thunderstorms, with 52mm of rain falling in an hour at one stage.

Firefighers had to rescue people from a car caught in flash flooding in Rosedale Road, south of Albany.

Floodwaters also trapped people in a car on Caribbean Drive, while emergency services received calls from about a dozen flooded homes in Albany.
