A 68-year-old man has been charged with murder following the shooting death of a 78-year-old in the South Taranaki town of Normanby.

Emergency services were called to the town, just north of Hawera, on Tuesday evening and treated the victim for gunshot wounds, but he died at the scene.

A 68-year-old man has since been arrested and charged with murder, Detective Sergeant Philip Skoglund says.

He will appear in New Plymouth District Court on Wednesday.
