Chatham Islands blaze 'far from over'

It could take another three weeks to fully extinguish the scrub fire on the Chatham Islands which has ripped through 2500 hectares of land.

It could take firefighters up to three weeks to fully extinguish a massive scrub fire on the Chatham Islands.

The fire, which broke out on the first day of February, has ripped through about 2500ha of land and was contained earlier this week.

The Chathams are about 800km east of New Zealand and are home to about 600 people. The islands are part of New Zealand.

Principal rural fire officer Craig Cottrill says firefighters and helicopter pilots have been working 11-hour days to get the blaze under control and now they're working equally hard to extinguish it.

The work is far from over and now attention has turned to putting the fire completely out and making sure it doesn't flare up again, he said.

There are hopes that the fire will be fully extinguished by the end of the month.

Firefighters have been using thermal imaging cameras to identify hotter areas that need to be doused with water.

An investigation is under way into how the fire started.
