Waikato racing manslaughter trial to begin

The trial of two young Hamilton men charged with manslaughter over the deaths of four people in an alleged street race in 2016 is due to start.

Two young Hamilton men are to go on trial charged with manslaughter for the deaths of four people in an alleged street race near Hamilton Airport.

Stephen Jones and Dylan Cossey, both in their late teens at the time of the crash in June 2016, will appear in Hamilton High Court on Monday on four counts of manslaughter.

The charges follow an incident near Ohaupo where a van collided with a car, causing the deaths of Hannah Lei Strickett-Craze, 24, Paul De Silva, 20, Lance Robinson, 28, and Stratford's Jason McCormick Ross, 19.

Eyewitnesses allege two cars had been racing between Te Awamutu and Hamilton on State Highway 3 before the accident, which resulted in one vehicle - a Nissan Skyline - splitting in two.

At the time, police said speed and alcohol were believed to be factors in the crash.

Cossey, the driver of the second car, has also been charged with five counts of unnecessary exhibition of speed and one of failing to stop to render assistance.
