NZ beat Pakistan, finish fifth in Fed Cup

New Zealand have defeated Pakistan 3-0 in their Fed Cup fifth-placed play-off, having failed to keep themselves in the promotion hunt.

New Zealand have thumped Pakistan 3-0 to finish fifth in what was ultimately a failed Fed Cup promotion tilt.

It was all too easy for the Kiwis, with singles players Erin Routliffe and Jade Lewis winning in straight sets against Ushna Suhail and Mahin Qureshi respectively and doubles duo Emily Fanning and Katherine Westbury following suit.

Earlier in proceedings in Bahrain, New Zealand's chances of Fed Cup promotion from Asia-Oceania group two were dashed by top seeds Uzbekistan.

They were routed 3-0 by the Uzbekis after beating Lebanon 3-0.

As a result, they failed to secure top spot in their pool, missing out on the chance to become one of two teams promoted to group one.

Team captain Neil Carter nevertheless saw reason for optimism.

"I think we have a group of girls who want to be tennis players and we've got to find ways to support them - even if it's only for eight, nine or 10 weeks a year, it's important to get them started out there," Carter said.

"So they (can) turn up to events like this really ready."
