    Steel sign another Jamaican shooter

Jamaican defender Malysha Kelly signs with the Southern Steel, hoping she'll make the same impact as compatriot Jhaniele Fowler-Reid.

The Southern Steel will hope they're onto another Jamaican jackpot after signing Malysha Kelly for the domestic netball premiership.

The 1.85m defender is close friends with prolific Steel shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, who enjoyed five successful seasons with the Steel.

International Fowler-Reid was a dominant force in the defunct trans-Tasman league and helped the Steel to an unbeaten record in winning the inaugural Kiwi-only premiership.

Her departure this year for the Perth-based West Coast Fever left Steel bosses searching for another international player to make an impact.

They hope to have found it with Kelly, who made her Jamiacan debut nearly a decade ago.

She is quick to shun comparisons with her international team-mate.

"I'm definitely my own person. She (Fowler-Reid) is a superstar and I appreciate the fact that she's really paved the way for us girls to play internationally," Kelly said.

"But I'm not putting pressure on myself to be like Jae - I'm just taking it one step at a time and just being me."

Kelly is eager to build a partnership with the defensive trio of Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit, Abby Erwood and Wendy Frew.

"I've always watched New Zealand and how they play the game. The style is one I've always wanted to learn because they're so in sync," said Kelly, who played for Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Australian Super League and Manchester Thunder in the UK Superleague.
