Police name man killed by rockfall

A motorist who stopped with others to clear a slip on a road and was killed by a rockfall has been named by police.

A motorist who stopped with others to clear a slip on a road on State Highway 4 and was killed by a rockfall has been named by police.

He was 70-year-old Paul Lenard Batchelor, from Taupo.

The slip is on SH4 near the Ruakawa Falls, between Whanganui and the Tongariro National Park, and the man was with other motorists who had stopped to clear rocks on Sunday when he was struck.

The man died at the scene despite attempts to resuscitate him.

A blessing of the site was undertaken on Monday with local iwi and police present.

Mr Batchelor's death has been referred to the Coroner.
