Police seek motorist in Opotiki homicide

Bay of Plenty police want to speak to a motorist that picked up a hitchhiker as part of the inquiry into the homicide.

Police investigating the death of a woman in Opotiki in the Bay of Plenty want to speak to a motorist, who picked up a hitchhiker on the day she died.

A 27-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman's body was found following a reported domestic incident on February 19 at a residential property, near central Opotiki.

Police would like to speak to a motorist, who picked up a hitchhiker between Te Kaha Medical Centre and Waihau Bay that day.

"We believe that a motorist picked up a young Maori man hitchhiking, sometime between midday and 5pm," says Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen.

The murder accused is scheduled to reappear in the High Court at Tauranga on March 14.

Det Snr Sgt Standen said police were grateful for the assistance from the Opotiki and Te Kaha communities during the investigation to date.
