South Auckland scrap yard still ablaze

Firefighters say a massive fire at a south Auckland scrap metal dealer could burn for another 24 hours.

A massive fire at a south Auckland scrap metal dealer could burn for another 24 hours, firefighters say.

The blaze initially burned through cars piled up to 12 metres high at Sims Pacific Metal on James Fletcher Drive in the suburb of Favona after fire crews were alerted about 2am on Wednesday.

More than 80 firefighters and 20 fire trucks tackled the fire at its height.

Sixty firefighters were still at the scene on Wednesday afternoon along with two excavators breaking up the scrap metal piles.

But with crews working to turn through about 20 tonnes of scrap an hour, and the fire engulfing about 1600 tonnes, it would take some time, Fire and Emergency NZ area commander Geoff Purcell says.

"We are making progress, but it is slow, arduous work and something we unfortunately can't speed through."

James Fletcher Drive would remain closed until at least midday on Thursday, he said.

Mr Purcell said while smoke from the blaze wasn't toxic, nearby people were encouraged to keep their windows and doors shut.

Fire crews are yet to reveal the cause of the fire.
