    One dead in Awakino road crash

    One person has died at the scene of a crash involving a car and a motorcycle on State Highway 3 just north of the Awakino tunnel.

    One person is dead after a collision between a car and a motorcycle near Awakino, on the central North Island west coast.

    Police were alerted at 3.26pm on Thursday and say the person died at the scene on State Highway 3.

    The crash happened 2km north of the Awakino tunnel and the highway is closed, with local diversions in place.

    The NZ Transport Agency says motorists should consider using an alternative route or delay their journey if possible.
