Darren Aronofsky thinks human beings are destroying Earth

The acclaimed director made the statement while discussing his divisive drama film 'Mother!', which starred Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, but left some movie-watchers scratching their heads in bemusement

Explaining the intention behind his film, in which Jennifer played a pregnant woman who endures a series of traumas, Darren said: "I wanted to make a film about Mother Earth and how we treat Mother Earth.

"The way I see we treat Mother Earth is incredibly disrespectful. We pillage her, we rape her, we call her dirt."

Darren explained that in spite of the criticism of the movie, Jennifer played her role exactly as he'd hoped.

He told Variety magazine: "That's why Jennifer played the character the way she did. There's a lot of emotion."

Darren also confirmed that Javier's character - a poet struggling with writer's block - was intended to represent God.

The 49-year-old movie-maker - who also directed 'The Wrestler' in 2008

    - shared: "I looked at the Bible and how the Old Testament God is painted.

"When you think about that God, if you don't pray to him, he kills you. What type of character does that? For me, it was about interpreting that to human emotion."

Darren revealed that, as the director, he likes to see himself in every single one of his movies.

Although he doesn't actually appear on screen, Darren - who dated Jennifer from September 2016 until October 2017 - feels like his presence is always felt through each and every one of his characters.

He explained: "I'm in every one of my films. I'm the wrestler. I'm the ballet dancer. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem's character.

I'm every character in every movie."
