Daniell advances, Venus ousted in doubles

Marcus Daniell is through to the men's doubles quarter-finals at the Indian Wells Masters in California, but Michael Venus has lost his second-round match.

** Please send to NZ Newswire **

Kiwi doubles player Marcus Daniell and Argentine partner Diego Schwartzman have scored another big win at the high-profile ATP tournament in California.

Daniell and Schwartzman are through to the quarter-finals at the Indian Wells Masters after a 6-4 6-2 win over the French pair of Adrian Mannarino and Fabrice Martin.

However, fellow New Zealander Michael Venus and South African partner Raven Klaasen have failed to progress past the second round.

The pair went down to American Rajeev Ram and Croatian Ivan Dodig 6-2 6-2, and will now look to regroup for the Miami Masters next week.

Daniell and Schwartzman had never played together before the tournament but have gelled quickly as a combination, with Schwartzman - the world's 17th-ranked singles player - proving he's also handy in doubles.

The pair beat singles specialists Philip Kohlschreiber (Germany) and Lucas Pouille (France) 4-6 6-2 10-7 in the opening round.

By reaching the quarter-finals, Daniell is guaranteed 180 ranking points and a share of $US56,000 ($NZ76,000).

He will also go close to surpassing his career-high world ATP doubles ranking of 34.

Daniell and Schwartzman will meet the winners of Americans Bob and Mike Bryan's match against Spaniards Pablo Carreno Busta and David Marrero.
