Taupo murder trial moves to Hamilton

A murder trial which has so far been dealt with in Rotorua will be heard about 100km away in Hamilton, upsetting those involved.

The lawyer of one of three men accused of a murder near Taupo has strongly objected to his client's trial and that of his co-accused being dealt with in Hamilton.

In the High Court at Rotorua on Wednesday, Jonathan Temm, who acts Cody Griffin, made his displeasure known to Justice Sarah Katz via video link saying it was inconvenient to witnesses and lawyers. Hamilton is about 100km from Rotorua.

"Everyone has to travel to meet the court's administrative convenience," he said.

However, the judge responded that the Rotorua High Court schedule was booked up for the year and unless another matter was adjourned the earliest a trial could be fitted into the crowded Rotorua list would be March next year.

Griffin, along with Daniel Chase and Whakatunaitanga Clarke, are charged with murdering Scott John Henry at a rural Kinloch property on July 2 last year.

They each face an additional aggravated robbery charge.

The judge remanded them in custody for trial in Hamilton on August 6 but noted Crown solicitor Amanda Gordon and court staff had said work was continuing to see if the trial could proceed in Rotorua but not necessarily on that date.

The three are to reappear for a further callover on April 19.

Meanwhile, Natasha Telford, who was dealt with separately has a charge of being a party to aggravated robbery dismissed and was discharged.
