Twelve cars have been impounded and 15 charges laid after police targeted illegal street racing near Tauranga.
Sergeant Scott Merritt said officers saw cars driven at speeds up to 150km/h and even charged a 17-year-old for doing a wheelie during the operation on Saturday and Sunday night.
The operation centred on Old Coach Road, south of Tauranga, as police put checkpoints in place around the Pongawaka area where cars were congregating and doing burnouts.
The charges laid included illegal street racing, drink driving, driving while suspended and doing burnouts.
Police also issued 43 notices for speeding and vehicle defects with 12 cars deemed unroadworthy.
"This isn't a case of young people having fun, they are a danger to themselves and others," Sgt Merritt said.
"This type of high risk behaviour puts the drivers and other road users in significant danger."
