Planned closure of Desert Road this week

The Desert Road through the middle of the North Island will be closed for 36 hours later this week for resurfacing of a bridge damaged in a crash.

The Desert Road in the central North Island, a key part of State Highway 1, will be closed for 36 hours from Thursday for more work on resurfacing a bridge damaged in a crash.

The road will be closed from 7am Thursday until 7pm Friday.

It's the second closure to allow the second part of the concrete deck to be poured on the Waihohonu Stream Bridge. The bridge was damaged in a crash last year.

People are being warned to expect delays on the detour route and also to check the NZTA website or call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) because the resurfacing is dependent on weather conditions.

When not closed the bridge will be down to one lane with a 30km/h limit, with some short closures of about five minutes until May 3 when it is expected to be open to two-way traffic without restriction.
