Four asleep as suspicious fire starts

Three adults and a child were asleep inside when an early-morning fire, which police are treating as suspicious, begin in a Porirua house.

A suspicious fire which began while four people, including a child, were sleeping inside a Porirua house is being treated as arson.

The early-morning blaze, which happened in Cannons Creek on April 7, caused extensive damage to the property.

Police say investigators have determined that it was the result of arson.

Fire and Emergency were called out around 4am that Saturday to Northumberland Street.

Three adults and a child who were asleep inside the house were woken by smoke alarms and able to get out.

Police say they want to speak to any witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious in the area around the time of the fire.

They are particularly interested in speaking to a man seen walking in the area at the time.

He has been described as Maori or Pacific Islander in his late 20s to early 30s.

He was wearing black jeans and a black and yellow singlet with the number "7" on the back, and had a black backpack.
