Stuff.co.nz's reporting an internal email from BP has come to light.
It instructs petrol stations in the lower North Island to put their petrol prices up to counteract a customer falloff in Otaki.
Now the government's calling for a meeting on this.
AA's Mark Stockdale says it's a deregulated market so there's nothing saying the fuel must be a certain price.
He says the price has been monitored on the basis of what it costs to bring in the fuel, plus a margin which varies across the country based on competition.
