Auckland Council signs off on regional fuel tax

The Transport Minister says Auckland Council signing off on a regional fuel tax is a victory for progress.

Phil Twyford says the council is to be congratulated for voting in favour of the tax 15 votes to two.

He says the council's National-aligned Councillors deserve a special mention for defying their party heavyweights, who oppose the tax.

Phil Twyford says they put Auckland's interests ahead of petty politicking.

The tax still has to go through two weeks of public submissions - starting tomorrow - and won't get final sign-off till June.
