Unearthed historic waka lucky to escape damage
An historical find while building a motorway north of Auckland has archaeologists breathing a sigh of relief.

The waka, buried near the Johnstone Tunnels in Puhoi, is around ten metres long, and appears to still be attached to a Kauri tree.
Excavation of the object is underway by an archaeology team and conservation specialist, after a pylon almost damaged the buried vessel.
Newstalk ZB reporter Daniel Walker, says if the pylon had gone down and hit either end of the Waka, then it could have damaged it significantly.
He says it is less than a metre away from where the waka was found, and archaeologists say if it were any closer then it could have damaged it, and further away and they may have missed it entirely.
