Undercover operation catches Auckland shops selling cigarettes to minors
An undercover operation has caught a number of Auckland shops selling cigarettes illegally to minors
4 May 2018
In just a couple of hours, volunteers under the age of 18 were able to buy cigarettes from three out of the ten Auckland shops they visited.
It's an offence which can attract a criminal conviction and a fine of up to 10-thousand dollars.
Auckland Regional Public Health Service's Dean Adam says it's disappointing to see retailers putting their own profits ahead of young people's health.
He says members of the community regularly dob in shops which sell tobacco to kids.
