Emergency services were called to reports of a person on fire in the Nations Church parking lot just before 11 this morning.
Pastor Peter Tate says church security staff tried to save the man, along with a member of the public, who got out of a car with a fire extinguisher.
He says people had done their best to help - but it had been too late
Police enquiries into the death established it is not suspicious.
Formal identification processes are underway and police are working to notify next of kin.
The matter is being referred to the coroner.
