Emergency services were called to the church on King Edward Street just before 11 o'clock this morning, where despite determined rescue efforts the man died at the scene.
Nations Church Pastor Peter Tate says he was told there was a serious incident occurring just before the service ended.
He says he made sure the congregation made its way out of another door, because the most important thing was to not traumatise the children.
Police have confirmed the death is not suspicious while those involved in the rescue efforts are being offered counselling.
