    New Zealand Rugby League admit a new direction was needed for the new Kiwis coach

    Michael Maguire's appointment sees him become the first non New Zealander in the role since Daniel Anderson in 2005.

    No kiwis made it to the interview process, with Maguire, Laurie Daley, Geoff Toovey and Des Hasler all considered.

    Former Kiwi Dean Bell was the convener of the coach selection panel and says he did hear a few New Zealand options say they were disappointed not to be looked at.
