Wellington's Victoria University is proposing to change both its English and Maori names
11 May 2018
As well as becoming the University of Wellington to avoid confusion with at least 12 other Victoria's, the university is proposing a new Te Reo title.
Vice-chancellor Grant Guilford says a Maori staff forum suggested Te Herenga Waka, meaning the hitching post of canoes.
He says symbolically it means students can feel part of a community, no matter where they're from.
There'll be a public meeting about the name changes on May 23.
