The kiwi will be in the same group as runaway leader Webb Simpson, who is seven shots to the good of Lee alone.
Lee consolidated second with a third-round two under 70, while Simpson signed for a four-under 68 to be 19-under.
Lee carded a rare blemish free round and says that was pleasing.
He says even when he missed birdie chances, he was pleased to make par.
No golfer has ever blown a third-round seven shot lead in PGA Tour history.
