Project AF8 has been working for two years now to draft the South Island Alpine Fault Earthquake Response - or 'SAFER.'
Steering group chair Angus McKay says geological evidence suggests the fault has an earthquake of magnitude 8 or higher every 300 years.
He says sediments from Fiordland have determined the last rupture was 1717.
