Joshua Lukic stole the New Zealand Memorial Cross medal during a burglary of a Redwood house in December.
Today at the District Court, Judge Stephen O'Driscoll called the 30-year-old a high-risk offender with a history dating back to 2002.
Ian Jones says Lukic also took a 42-year-old engagement ring, other jewellery, foreign currency, a digital camera, and Fire Service medals
He says the five years' jail won't bring back the family treasures.
