The Serbian, who's seeded 20 due to his recent elbow injury absence, secured a straight-sets win but says his approach to the game has changed.
He says he's the father of two children and his life is not only about tennis as it has been in the past.
Meanwhile Marco Trungelliti's epic journey came to an end in the second round after driving 10 hours and 1000 kilomatres from Barcelona to get in the draw and beat Bernard Tomic.
He's been beaten by Italian Marco Cecchinato, but netted about $129,000 in prize money.
In the women's draw, Simona Halep and Petra Kvitova have won through.
