Williams has illustrated her title credentials by brushing aside German 11th seed Julia Goerges 6-3 6-4, and will face Maria Sharapova for a place in the quarters.
The Russian was equally impressive in crushing sixth seed Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 6-1.
Top seed Simona Halep is also through, along with men's defending champion Rafael Nadal who has thrashed French hope Richard Gasquet in straight sets.
Kiwi doubles defending champ Mike Venus has bowed out in the third round.
