A leading Samoan educator - and the first Pacific woman MP - is to become a Dame

Luamanuvao Winnie Laban becomes a Dame Companion of The New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to education and the Pacific community.
She was a Minister in the Clark Labour Government, and is now Assistant Vice-Chancellor Pasifika at Victoria University.
Winnie Laban is an advocate for greater Maori and Pacific educational achievement, and equity in the sector.
She says it's critical that all children from every decile are given the best quality schooling.
