Documents from the New Zealand Transport Agency show 600 steel tubes to be used in the Huntly Bypass failed a brittleness test.
The 12 metre tubes imported from China were instead cut in half and used with concrete reinforcing.
And the failure at Huntly has also prompted a look at the Transmission Gully project, where there's no requirement for independent steel testing, despite the steel needing to hold up loads, in a quake-prone area.
