Major steel failures have been revealed on the Waikato Expressway

Major steel failures have been revealed on the Waikato Expressway

Documents from the New Zealand Transport Agency show 600 steel tubes to be used in the Huntly Bypass failed a brittleness test.

The 12 metre tubes imported from China were instead cut in half and used with concrete reinforcing.

And the failure at Huntly has also prompted a look at the Transmission Gully project, where there's no requirement for independent steel testing, despite the steel needing to hold up loads, in a quake-prone area.
