US golf Open officials admit Shinnecock Hills was too tough in the afternoon of the third round
17 June 2018
Former major winner Zach Johnson claimed the USGA has lost the golf course after the set-up drew just three under-par rounds.
World number one and co-leader Dustin Johnson, after being in control for the first two rounds, battled in the third with a seven over day.
USGA boss Mike Davis says they want to make it tough, but it became too tough.
He says all the members who set the course up were happy with what had been set up but it got too tough on them in some areas.
Johnson is at three-over alongside last year's champion Brooks Koepka , Daniel Berger and Tony Finau .
He says it's supposed to be tough and there was only a couple of flags that were dicey.
