The owner of Grey Lynn's Hylite Dairy was stabbed multiple times by a male attacker during the attempted robbery.
The dairy owner's 62-year-old mother was also stabbed and her collarbone was broken, when she and other family members came to her son's aid.
The offender then fled.
Detective Inspector Scott Beard says a man is assisting Police with their inquiries, and they're asking anyone with any information to come forward.
He says only one offender entered the shop, however there may have been a second or third person outside.
