The Highlanders and Tasman loose forward has got the nod at blindside flanker for the third and final test in Dunedin, with Liam Squire and Vaea Fifita both out through injuries.
Coach Steve Hansen says if both were fit, it's unlikely they would have called on Frizell, who has made just 10 appearances in Super Rugby.
He says he could sit there and say he was planning to use him, but they probably wouldn't have.
Steve Hansen says having said that, Frizell has proven over the last three weeks he's good enough to be in the squad.
