The number eight had back surgery in December and will turn out for Counties Manukau during their domestic pre-season match against Tasman on Wednesday.
Read last played against Scotland during last year's Northern Tour.
In more positive injury news, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen expects hooker Dane Coles to be involved in the back half of the upcoming Rugby Championship campaign.
Elsewhere, Beauden Barrett,and Vaea Fifita are fit, while Brodie Retallick, Liam Squire and Nepo Laulala are also likely to be feature during the campaign.
