The Reserve Bank won't be issuing an official digital currency any time soon

It's been exploring the possibility because a digital currency would be easier and faster to distribute around the country than banknotes.
But it says introducing the currency would mean new infrastructure costs.
The Reserve Bank deputy Governor Geoff Bascand says there is also a risk that issuing a digital currency could undermine financial stability.
He says it's too early to make a decision.
